There's a gitlab repo for "hack" for fprintd (here), but you are right the aur package points to a non-existent link.
So first, I'm a bit confused about AUR. I'm not aware of what you're describing. I heard about AUR-like repo for Nix (called NUR https://github.com/nix-community/NUR).
Third benefit in that use case is that it's very simple to patch up existing app. For example related to fprintd which you mentioned, the standard definition how to build is this: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/master/pkgs/tools/security/fprintd/default.nix
