I know you said she's not interested in modding it, but if a stranger on the internet's words can count for anything I would strongly recommend it. There's extremely little risk just follow the guide and even if you completely mess up (which is very hard to do, the tools are quite simple) the absolute worse possible case is you buy an "ntrboot" compatible DS flashcard and fix it with that. Then it gives you access to so much homebrew, region free, perfect GBA compatibility, etc. A DS flashcard also isn't needed with CFW, though it can still be beneficial for a few games.
