It is possible to largely avoid this problem of having to sync subtitles when you go to watch something by using software that can automatically find the offset. I made one a while back that embeds the offset and subtitles into the MKV file: https://github.com/iwalton3/media-scripts/tree/master/subtitle-audio-transfer

Yes if you use subsync by itself it emits a pre-synced SRT file. https://github.com/smacke/ffsubsync
