The upcoming "flagship" GNOME IM client right now is probably Fractal. It's the GNOME client for the relatively new and open Matrix messaging protocol. The current stable version is very outdated, but it's getting a new, major version very soon. Fractal 5 is actually a rewrite of the entire thing, and it's looking really promising (thus the flagship status even though it hasn't been released yet).
