  • Mastodon

Your self-hosted, globally interconnected microblogging community

Choose a server that make sense to you. As u/ecalc recommends joinmastodon.org is a good start to search for different servers but it does not list all the smaller and obscure servers. There are servers based on different communities and/or interests. One of the most popluar one is .social but you can join servers based on almost any interest such as tech, film, music, art, sport etc. The reason to choose a server that suits you is because your 'local' feed will contain other people posting in a similar vain to what your into. HOWEVER you can follow and connect with anyone on any other server/instance regardless of whatever one you join. I'll give you an example - I initially joined the official server for my home country thinking that would make the most sense, however the feed ended up being populated with tons of political bullshit which I don't care for. Ended up making a new account on a different server that's based more on my hobbies and not my location and it seems to be working out better. Plus I can still follow anyone else on any other instance. Hope this helps you. The interface is confusing at first but it's pretty easy. You can follow people and hashtags but be careful with following large amounts of hashtags as it can fill your feed with lots of random crap.
