stellarium
Stellarium is a free GPL software which renders realistic skies in real time with OpenGL. It is available for Linux/Unix, Windows and macOS. With Stellarium, you really see what you can see with your eyes, binoculars or a small telescope.
If you want to find objects using a manual telescope, it's best to use an app that shows the sky for your location and time. Stellarium is often recommended, but my own app Nightshift for Android is also up to the task.
