What makes neovim 'distros' better than just simple dotfiles?

Besides the full feature IDE getRandomSpaceName() && getRandomFeelingName() vim Distros, there is - IMHO - a sweat spot with some basic starter distros (the first spreads the settings over many files, the second tries to keep everything in two files). I think they are much better for beginners, since it's easy to understand how things work under the hood.
