https://github.com/teqnodude/glftpd-installer BBS was usually for pirates. Modern equivalent is private ip restricted ftp with irc invite / announce bot. the "users" race each other. It can be fun but it is hard finding users if you are not in the scene anymore.
And still getting commits.
Old-school bbs seem pretty dead and gone, although I was looking at Discourse as a possible modern revival-in-spirit. Haven't dug deep into it yet but lately I keep stumbling onto instances of it in the wild.
