  3. Trilium Notes

Build your personal knowledge base with Trilium Notes

Project mention: Logseq 2.0 Beta (DB version) is here | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-07-13

    > You can apply tags to blocks, which make them a kind of thing (a project, an author, a quote, a thought)

FWIW, needing typed notes is what settled me on Trilium Notes after a foray into a bunch of alternatives, including Notion, Anytype, Obsidian, etc

I realized that efficient note taking and knowledge management generally means (to me) having "dimension lists" (collections of places, people, projects, ...) being referred to in topical notes/journals/events, generally organized as a hierarchy (but not always). Once you come to that realisation (and that your notes system is essentially a glorified RDBMS), you want a system that ensures that "notes of the same type remain as consistent as possible", which Trilium makes easy via Templates and/or Inheritance (attributes can be inherited in the OOP sense, or composed like traits), collections to represent, manage and edit large amounts of notes at once, and emacs-levels of scripting if that's your jam.

  8. massCode

Project mention: Our efforts, in part, define us | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-10-01

I have never heard of a snippet manager until right now. (In good faith:) Where did you hear of them? Should I be following news somewhere else?

I see this one is popular and high on DDG: https://github.com/massCodeIO/massCode

But there's no screenshots or example usages, and it's not obvious to me how it works.

Is it like a local search engine you install? Is it an LSP? An LSP that's lighter than rust-analyzer could be useful for this kind of thing.

I can recommend Standard Notes as an alternative. https://standardnotes.com/

Works well on all paltforms, desktop and mobile. The sync works also great. It also backs up to text files on your computer, so that you can back up your files with your regular backup process and you can also easily move away if you would like to one day.

  11. open-knowledge

Beautiful, AI-native markdown IDE and LLM wiki

    Project mention: OpenKnowledge – open-source alternative to Obsidian/Notion | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-06-25

    - A dual-observer CRDT to keep the ProseMirror and markdown state in-sync.

The CRDT + git also power a collaborative experience that shows what Agents are doing in the markdown, have undo/redo, and version history. The “Share” and cloud-sync functionality are geared for team collaboration. They feel “no-code” but leverage git/GitHub under the hood, which also means data stays fully private.

In that spirit, we made OpenKnowledge open source for anybody who’s curious or who’d like to contribute. Repo: https://github.com/inkeep/open-knowledge.

We’re actively thinking about plugins/extensibility and what’s next. If you have suggestions or feedback, would love to hear it.

An Ephemeral Markdown Paper. Less but handy features for plain Markdown lovers.

Project mention: Show HN: Aeph – Just a paper for your terminal, not an editor | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-01-19

    Hi HN,

I’ve always loved the simplicity of Ephe (https://ephe.app/), but I wanted that same ephemeral, "just-a-piece-of-paper" experience in my terminal. So I built Aeph in Rust.

Aeph is not a text editor. It’s a minimalist scratchpad designed for quick brain dumps, notes, and task management without the overhead of file management or configuration.

    Why use Aeph?

  22. Codex

A free note-taking software for programmers and Computer Science students (by jcv8000)

  23. obsidian-plugin

  24. unforget

Unforget is a minimalist end-to-end encrypted note-taking app without Electron.js

Project mention: I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-08-11

I've gone through this too and came to the same conclusion except for phone.

While on laptop/desktop nothing beats txt (or md or org), it's just so uncomfortable using a text file like that on the phone and relying on dropbox or something.

And I get it, all the note taking apps on the phone have issues: not local first, proprietary, subscriptions, or no encryption, or a thousand features before making sure the full text search works even offline.

Last year I finally sat down and wrote my own PWA out of frustration [1]. There was a SHOW HN too [2]. Yes, shameless plug. There are only a handful of other people using it (and probably never more than that) but I really wrote it for myself and it's been such a relief the past year knowing I always have my notes whenever wherever and works exactly the way I want.

I probably spent <5h fixing a few issues in the past year. As far as I'm concerned, my problem is solved once and for all.
