Virtualization
  1. windows

    Windows inside a Docker container.

Project mention: Updating Xbox controller firmware from Linux: the USB hotplug trap | dev.to | 2026-09-29

Open http://127.0.0.1:8006 and let Windows install. The setup builds on dockur/windows; the repository pins the image used in the original session. The console is bound to localhost.

  2. AppSignal

  3. OSX-KVM

Run macOS on QEMU/KVM. With OpenCore + Monterey + Ventura + Sonoma support now! Only commercial (paid) support is available now to avoid spammy issues. No Mac system is required.

    Project mention: Framework Laptop 13 Pro | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-04-21
  4. macos

    MacOS inside a Docker container.

Project mention: Show HN: Lume 0.2 – Build and Run macOS VMs with unattended setup | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-01-18

    re: https://github.com/dockur/macos

A closer comparison here is Lumier, which provides a "Docker-like" interface to spin up VMs with a noVNC server: https://cua.ai/docs/lume/guide/advanced/lumier/docker

The key difference: dockur/macos uses QEMU+KVM, which only works on Linux hosts. It can't run on macOS hardware since Apple doesn't expose KVM. See: https://github.com/dockur/macos/issues/256

  5. quickemu

Quickly create and run optimised Windows, macOS and Linux virtual machines

    Project mention: OpenCiv3: Open-source, cross-platform reimagining of Civilization III | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-02-06

quickemu [1] is good at running macOS VMs.

  6. OSX-PROXMOX

Project mention: Quickemu: Quickly create and run optimised Windows, macOS and Linux VMs | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-12-30

Don’t kill the messenger but https://github.com/luchina-gabriel/OSX-PROXMOX

I installed Sequoia but it’s painfully slow on a 4 core 3ghz something or other. I previously did the one after high sierra and it’s reasonably snappy, but APFS outdated for my situation

  7. try

Inspect, control, and manipulate a command's effects before modifying your live system.

Project mention: Sandboxing AI Agents in Linux | news.ycombinator.com | 2026-02-03

    > Part #2 to me, I also want observability as to what the agent changed.

You could potentially combine https://github.com/binpash/try with bubblewrap (I'm not sure how well they compose and as the docs say it isn't a full sandbox).

The good (and bad because it's confusing and can lead to surprises if misconfigured) thing about Linux containers is all the pieces of containers can be used independently. The "try" tool lets you use the overlay part of containers on your host system, just like Bubblewrap lets you combine the namespacing parts of containers with your host system.

  8. HiddenVM

HiddenVM — Use any desktop OS without leaving a trace.

  14. freebsd-wifibox

wifibox: Use Linux to drive your wireless card on FreeBSD

    Project mention: A Brief Look at FreeBSD | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-11-12

    - Networking stack. Good. Stable. Makes sense to me.

For a nice graphical UI Linux is more smooth but if you are willing to tinker it can work. As Linux gets all the attention you will see stuff such as Chromium lag behind.

I can understand that can scare people off. But FreeBSD feels like a comfortable old glove for me. I will suffer the minor holes. My beard har grayed.

If waiting for a laptop I would perhaps wait for FreeBSD 15 for much needed improvements in WIFI. If you want fast WIFI today you need weird hacks routing through a Linux VM[1]. It works rather well but it is honestly a bit clunky.
