I use n (https://github.com/tj/n) for managing node and node versions, however recently I noticed a package I use (jupyterlab) has nodejs as a dependency, so it installed node v18 at a system level, which prevented me from using n.

I will not cover this here. A good option is nodenv. For the purposes of this excersie you need to be on node 14.x - 16.x (not 12.x or 17.x).
