I have been using a monolingual French dictionary based on Wiktionary downloaded from this site and it works pretty well - I just tested it quickly and it gave me a few different meanings for each word I just tried out. For reference, I was also trying out dictionaries for other languages and was directed to this thread on MobileRead. I haven't tried the French one from there, but it may be worth a try - the person who recommended it said their Spanish dictionary was the best (and the one for Portuguese I use is from there too).
