The swiss army knife for Magento developers, sysadmins and devops. The tool provides a huge set of well tested command line commands which save hours of work time. All commands are extendable by a module API.
FWIW, the reason this worked is because the setup:upgrade command clears your generated files. This forces Magento to regenerate them when you then navigate to a page in your browser - including your stylesheets. If you have the n98-magerun2 package installed then the dev:asset:clear command should be all you need to resolve this in future. Otherwise simply running the following should have the same effect:
