So after setting up Zerotier on OpenWRT (https://github.com/mwarning/zerotier-openwrt/wiki) I was able to connect to my local network and access my nas and my android tv server (don't ask).

Trying to install on Linksys E8450
Right, I think you've got the wrong image. This device needs to be repartitioned first, so you need an -installer- image. I strongly suggest you read through dangowrt's page to do some backups if you ever want to return to the stock firmware. Then, try this image from dangowrt's installer page .

Router review: Belkin RT3200 - The best AX router for OpenWrt (for now)
I recently got a pair of Belkin RT3200 routers from the recent Walmart deal since apparently it was one of just a half dozen AX routers that support OpenWrt. I went with the Daniel's excellent UBI installer https://github.com/dangowrt/linksys-e8450-openwrt-installer and everything worked great.
More space to install packages, has wear-leveling, seems a bit more stable - see this for more info https://github.com/dangowrt/linksys-e8450-openwrt-installer/issues/9.

I think I broke my router when trying to install openWRT? (Belkin RT3200)
At first, I tried to select the file openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin as the update file for my router, that did nothing, then I tried using openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-initramfs-kernel.bin, and now my router is broken I think. Would someone please help me? I was going to use this, but the script didn't work.
Second, the directions indicate that if you are flashing from the OEM Web GUI that you should be using the .itb file instead of the .bin (presumably that is for sysupgrade once converted to UBI flash layout). There are pre generated images available here (linked from the github page).
- Went from my fastest connection speeds on Friday after setup to about 1/100th the download speed Sunday night to completely disconnected this morning.
