As far as wms go, I always liked fluxbox and xmonad. Openbox has its fans, and i3 is very popular. I prefer a de over a wm but I know a lot of people use i3.

How are you installing the xmonad code that you try to build? Have you cloned https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad and https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad-contrib into your ~/.xmonad directory, and then running stack init?

You can install xmonad 0.17 from source. There's a few ways of doing that, check the installation guide, most are quite straightforward.

I had little success with manual splits because I was busy resizing most of the time. Therefore the idea with windows that are always as big as their content. The code for the windows is already built so that the logic per tab is interchangeable, how the windows should behave. You just have to implement more layouts, as I call them. The concept comes from Xmonad. In this link you can see examples when you scroll down to "Layouts": https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-contrib

I mainly use XMonad.Prompt module for session management (or whatever you would call that). I have session commands defined across those files and I use XMonad.Prompt.DirExec module to create a prompt which executes those scripts with [this line](https://github.com/alternateved/nixos-config/blob/f781c6006cd50e3e4becaa05572ccba5313f12df/config/xmonad/xmonad.hs#L279]

This is how I set my sway up. I am afraid this configuration might be a bit convoluted - I also use flakes and home-manager module.

Would you mind checking my sway configuration in nix and comparing it with yours?

I've set up my xmonad and xmobar as a cabal project. Here you could see xmonad and xmobar overrides. I build alternateved-xmonad binary from this directory and install it from here.

Yes, I did run into some walls in regards to setting latest xmonad on NixOS. I did managed to change version of main package but nothing past that point. I am afraid I lost some files from the process, but this is the approach that I was trying to use. Passing maintaned by you flakes through inputs and then somehow trying to override the packages from nixpkgs. Currently it won't build I am afraid.
