Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

One of the greatest user interface disasters in history
Mastodon is a microblogging service, so not meant for large bodies of text. This is why the text entry box is small, the columns are somewhat narrow (especially in deck mode) etc.
Platforms like https://writefreely.org/ , which are designed to be for blogging and long-form writing, are the place to write this. Write Freely federates so one can follow accounts and interact with posts via Mastodon etc.

Which platform for occasional blog posts?
An alternative to Plume is WriteFreely, which is a pretty clean & simple experience. Just don't expect to much regarding customization.

It’s 2023. Start using JavaScript Map and Set
I also wish write.as were more popular. It's like old Medium, but less popular but with a more reader-friendly business model and self-host-able (AGPL v3)

Newbie Question
Instead of joining a Mastodon server, have you considered joining a write.freely server? Write.freely is a decentralized platform for writers that integrates the ActivityPub protocol, so anyone in the Fediverse can interact with your posts. This may be more well suited for your needs, although if you still want to join a Mastodon server there are many good answers in this thread.
Lastly, and this isn't Mastodon, but if you want to write long form content on the Fediverse, you might want to check out Write Freely. It's kinda like Medium, but your posts live in the Fediverse.

Determining the best fit for Mastodon instances.
If you're looking to publish long form content, you should also look at Write Freely. It's a blogging platform where the fediverse is baked in from the start. The plug-in you found will work great, especially when paired with a Mastodon instance. But it might be worth a look if you haven't seen it already. (That said it sounds like you want to deeply structure your content, so Write Freely might not be enough for your goals anyways.)

Open source at Fastly is getting opener
Through the Fast Forward program, we give free services and support to open source projects and the nonprofits that support them. We support many of the world’s top programming languages (like Python, Rust, Ruby, and the wonderful Scratch), foundational technologies (cURL, the Linux kernel, Kubernetes, OpenStreetMap), and projects that make the internet better and more fun for everyone (Inkscape, Mastodon, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Terms of Service; Didn’t Read).

Bluesky announces data federation for self hosters
Mastodon DMs have absolutely no privacy: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18079
For a decentralized protocol doing things right is much more important than doing things fast, it is very difficult (and in a lot of cases impossible) to break backwards compatibility.

You Can't Follow Me
Mastodon is free and open-source. Go ahead and add the flag:

Thank you for your write-up, I ran into similar issues a couple of months back.
Another gripe with the technical implementation of mastodon is the CORS headers required to access the ActivityPub API [0].
Because of this issue, an activitypub-aware frontend for mastodon has to have its own mastodon server running, which adds a whole bunch of hurdles.

Youtube ad block on pc (ublock origin)
If you're looking for YouTube alternatives, you might be interested in PeerTube. PeerTube is to YouTube what Mastodon is to Twitter. (Plus PeerTube and Mastodon use the same federation technology. You can follow PeerTube accounts from inside Mastodon and vice versa.)

MathJax – Beautiful and accessible math in all browsers
Mathstodon ( https://mathstodon.xyz/about ) integrates this, forking/extending Mastodon to support inline LaTeX in Mastodon posts and equations, which get rendered by MathJax on the client side. I think that's neat.
- "This is important, since several math-based instances exist (such as https://mathstodon.xyz ,https://types.pl) and produce math-based posts. However, when these posts federate to other instances they cannot be rendered, since other instances do not have MathJAX installed. Thus, a more portable version based on open standards is necessary."
