winsafe VS sciter-js-sdk

I know all that shit because I'm the author of Rust's WinSafe library, which is a safer Rust layer over native Win32, so I had to deal with a lot of shit like this.

Externally, you can write a lot of native Windows stuff in Rust already. Personally, I'm having a lot of fun with WinSafe.

If you had such problems (which I also had in the past), I'm really interested in you opinion about WinSafe, and if it could help you solving them.

If you're after a native Windows application, WinSafe may suit your needs.

As the author of WinSafe, I can say it's tedious sometimes, but it's often very challenging, because you have to translate crazy unsafe behaviors into Rust's ownership model. It's surely hard, but also very rewarding at the end.

As the author of the WinSafe lib, I wholeheartedly agree.

I don't know how rare this is (or how rare it should be), but this issue warned me about this potential problem, and I had to make a huge refactoring to treat the possibility. I had to rethink many aspects of all handle implementations. It was hard work, but in the end it was worth it.

WinSafe says hello.

WinSafe, for example (which attemps to be a safe layer over the Windows API), provides lots of RAII automations. A fine example is the BeginPaint function:

How tiny is the output? What is the API? (I couldn't find any documentation. Having normal procedural language for build automation is of course useful. That's for those 10% of cases when "standard" build DSL (make,CMake,etc.) simply do not have facilities.

But the rest of 90% tasks should have compact (easily readable) definitions.

I personally found that Premake5 has quite good balance for these tasks.

Premake files are plain .lua files and due to Lua syntax they are easily readable. And if needed you can call from them procedures defined in again Lua.

So typical project (multiplatform) definition looks pretty readable, for example one project from Sciter SDK:

That's why in Sciter I've extended JSX with translation meta instruction @:

Note Tauri is full fledged Client/Server with WebView (client) is running in separate process with RPC between UI process and Rust code (Server).

For the comparison:

Standalone Sciter (scapp.exe, https://github.com/c-smile/sciter-js-sdk/tree/main/bin) takes ~8 MB of RAM (with minimal Cairo and GDI backends).

That's 20 times less than even Tauri.

WebView based solutions are not suitable for applets - small portable desktop applications.

scapp.exe ( Standalone sciter engine ) takes 45 Mb showing its default "about" document.

It does support , with limited support but still.
