Overcoming Tab Overload
I'm in a very similar situation as you are regarding my browser usage and needs. I now have 46 windows open and 2.1K tabs open, but I've had at some point almost 70 windows and more than 7K tabs...
The most useful extensions I've found to manage this complexity are 1) [window-titler](https://github.com/tpamula/webextension-window-titler) and [winger](https://github.com/l10nelw/winger)
This is the script I made to bring up the firefox window I desire from the custom name I gave it using window-titler:
```bash
auto-tab-discard
-
That's true.
Also https://github.com/rNeomy/auto-tab-discard, which despite the name, doesn’t close tabs, it just unloads them from memory.
-
Is there any addon that suspends/ hibernates tabs and restores them back when required like in Chromium based browsers there's "the great suspender" or "tiny suspender" and keeps a copy of tabs suspended as backup file on device?
I'm using Auto Tab Discard for very fine control but it is not needed most of the time. FF does this automatically now via Tab Unloading
Extension like the great suspender in chrome?
I think there is an issue open for this in the auto tab repo. Assuming that wasn't you who opened it you can go there and give a +1 to motivate the dev.
- Edge like sleeping tabs possibility with userChrome.js?
-
Inconsistent battery life?
If something like Google Chrome is using a lot of power, can I determine which sites are using the most resources in its Task Manager (Shift+Esc)? Can I use something like Auto Tab Discard to minimize resource usage in tabs I'm not using?
Opening hundreds of tabs in client browser by using server's RAM
I think this extension does something similar: https://add0n.com/tab-discard.html
- How to use native FF discard system (over the addons)?
- How to get rid of xdotool's annoying delay?
Overcoming Tab Overload
Thanks for your reply. It's good to hear that Tabs Outliner is a favorite for other power users out there. Interesting that you had a great synergy between it and The Great Suspender. I myself hadn't ever used The Great Suspender before hearing about it's recent demise. It sounded pretty useful, and upon looking for alternatives, I discovered the cross-browser extention Auto Tab Discard. FYI: https://github.com/rNeomy/auto-tab-discard
What does this sleeping symbol mean?
If you have the Auto Tab Discard add-on installed, a recent release started to prepend the 💤 emoji to the title of discarded tabs.
What are some alternatives?
thegreatsuspender - A chrome extension for suspending all tabs to free up memory
min - A fast, minimal browser that protects your privacy
RecipeFilter - Chrome extension that focuses recipes front and center on food blogs
xdotool - fake keyboard/mouse input, window management, and more
tabist - Simple Tab Manager Extension for Chrome and Firefox.
keepassxc - KeePassXC is a cross-platform community-driven port of the Windows application “Keepass Password Safe”.
tablist - copy and paste lists of open tabs
CodeRibbon - Navigate your code in an infinite timeline of code patches!
webextension-window-titler - Label your Firefox windows and profiles by modifying window title
TabList - A free alternative tablist with fewer options
tab_suspender_firefox - A very lightweight tab suspender that reduces an overall memory usage of firefox, uses firefox native discard api
