vscode-neovim VS vim-pencil

Since v1.0+ of this extension I have been constantly having issues with neovim's and VSCode's buffers got out of sync. I cannot reliably reproduce the issues however. There are a few similar reports, e.g. https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim/issues/1624. I've switched to other VIM extension (VSCodeVim) which I found more reliable, albeit less powerful.

Use https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim instead.

You can have it both ways! Use neovim to handle key presses in VSCode, keep all the benefits of a text editor that (mostly) Just Works.

https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim embeds nvim in vscode. I use it at work full-time.

This post is all over the place. What are you asking? What problem exactly did you have with the https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim (ensure that you did not install https://github.com/VSCodeVim/Vim , which people often confuse with the other).

I was using the VSCodeVim plugin, but it kept breaking. I now moved to the Neovim plugin and works great!

I recently installed the vscode-neovim extension in order to use Vim inside VSCode. I also enabled the experimental vim-easymotion plugin specified by the docs to help with navigation, but unfortunately, I am having trouble getting it to work.

Imagine feeling like you have to make a choice between the two. I didn’t have to.

Just FYI, Using vscode-neovim you get a fully embedded instance of Neovim in Vscode, which is a much better experience compared to Vim emulation.

Another option is vim-pencil.

Both of the above are naturally integrated into billions of nvim plugins. I store files in a cloud folder to have access to them on my phone. There are apps that allow you to work with notes written in markdown like Obsidian. You should have a way to quickly go to your writing files. You could use telescope-project.nvim, startify shortcuts, or any other session plugin. I would also recommend setting up LSP for writing. You will be able to have diagnostics, "code actions" on wrong grammar, allowing you to add words to dictionary and suppress rules. I use ltex_extra.nvim for this. There are also a good set of plugins for writing by one author, just check them at the bottom of the pencil page.

It was fun, and the setup is almost identical to iA Writer which I appreciate. I even had it all on my phone with Termux!

Last year I just did it in Markdown in VSCode in "zen mode" which also worked pretty well. It was definitely easier to setup than Vim and had better highlighting of bold/italics/etc.

You may like vim-pencil if you use markdown. It adds several small conveniences around word wrap options, among other things. Note also that the author of pencil includes many useful links in the README for conceiving vim as a tool for prose. My workflow is based on pandoc and bibtex. But that part's not vim- specific.

You may find vim-pencil usefull. The readme has some good links.

vim-pencil sets undo points at the end of every sentence (and other things) although you might not want to install a full plugin just for that.

For grammar and spellchecking, I use many plugins. The main one is Pencil. I also use Vim Ditto, Lexical, and Wordy

I use vim-pencil to do the soft line wrapping. I should say that one annoyance of the setup is that, as far as I understand, there is no easy way to limit the number of displayed characters per line in soft wrap mode---you would have to use something like goyo.vim or manually change your console window size.

you might be interested in vim pencil then. if you edit a paragraph in insert mode while hard wrapping, it will reflow automatically.

All these solutions look promising. I've already benefited from including them in my VIM configuration while writing this blog post. Will do further testing and investigation in next days. Haven't yet tried plugins like vim-pencil or vim-abolish.
