vscode-neovim VS doom-emacs

There's a vscode extension that embeds NeoVim and just uses VSCode UI as a front end to delegate key presses to:

This yields a better experience than the old half baked VSCode vim emulation.

Since v1.0+ of this extension I have been constantly having issues with neovim's and VSCode's buffers got out of sync. I cannot reliably reproduce the issues however. There are a few similar reports, e.g. https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim/issues/1624. I've switched to other VIM extension (VSCodeVim) which I found more reliable, albeit less powerful.

You can have it both ways! Use neovim to handle key presses in VSCode, keep all the benefits of a text editor that (mostly) Just Works.

In insert mode I'd like to be able to hit escape and return to visual mode, but I have to hit escape twice if a suggestion popup is visible. Similar to this: vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim#677

https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim embeds nvim in vscode. I use it at work full-time.

This post is all over the place. What are you asking? What problem exactly did you have with the https://github.com/vscode-neovim/vscode-neovim (ensure that you did not install https://github.com/VSCodeVim/Vim , which people often confuse with the other).

Sounds like what you want is emacs, but preconfigured. In that case, have you tried Doom Emacs, Spacemacs or any of the myriad of others like those?

The performance lag of Spacemacs was addressed by Doom Emacs ( https://github.com/hlissner/doom-emacs ). Have you tried Doom Emacs by any chance. After syncing everything, the performance is stellar in my opinion.

but I just realized, you're probably better off using doom emacs. The defaults are sane, customizations are almost always optional and the community's really active/helpful. (Disclaimer: I'm a doom emacs user with ~2k lines of config)

While Doom is more opinionated, it's not too difficult make Emacs your own, most of the choices are optimized anyway. Currently the head of Spacemacs devs is not active on the project anymore. Nowadays, I use https://github.com/hlissner/doom-emacs with WSL2 but only for org-mode. For code, I have either Sublime Text or VS Code.
