A collection of useful Mac Apps
VLC - Price: Free Free and open-source media player that plays most multimedia files and DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. (UX/UI feels outdated imo)

C++ is everywhere, but noone really talks about it. What are people's thoughts?
Seems to be C, not C++ to me. The C++ code is GUI wrappers to C++ GUI systems.

Ask HN: IP cameras that don't require an app or internet
I bought a couple Amcrests just a week ago, and they still operate identically to ones I purchased back in 2017. They have apparently re-branded Dahua's software, since the HTTP APIs are identical, and there are still lots of "Dauha" strings in the configs[0].
I think a lot of the problems with IP cams aren't with the cameras themselves, but the poor state of open-source media players. Getting mplayer, ffplay, or vlc to play nicely with any ipcam has been a Labor of Hercules. If you're using the versions in repos--which are usually quite stale--all bets are off. I've had much better luck using the latest installers, direct from the project websites. So far, VLC seems to work best for me[1].

can't retrieve videos from Canon PowerShot SD1000
You'll need a player like VLC to view your clips. YouTube is built on ffmpeg and will blindly accept your videos. If you want to edit your clips you might have to convert your videos to another format and codec, depending on your editing tools of choice.

Microsoft no longer signs Windows drivers for Process Hacker
> I'd love to see an alternative world where everything has an equivalent open-source software that people can switch to
Keep in mind that software doesn't need to be open source to run on Linux. Developers can still support the Linux ecosystem by porting proprietary software to Linux.
Examples of proprietary Linux software that is used professionally:
- DaVinci Resolve (video editing suite): https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/
- Bitwig Studio (digital audio workstation): https://www.bitwig.com
- JetBrains Rider (IDE for .NET): https://www.jetbrains.com/rider/

Tips on apps for editing and "dubbing" videos
I'm a huge fan of DaVinci Resolve for video editing. It is just as powerful as Premiere, has a workflow and user interface that feels intuitive, and, importantly, it's FREE. Their audio editor has its own section called Fairlight within the app, and when you load your mkv recording into Resolve, you should see your selected audio tracks separated out and in graphical wave form. From there, you can zone in on the specific areas of the track with the offending noise pollution and selectively gate it out by adjusting your levels/ applying VST's.

My hardware and software for audio and video production
Mostly Adobe Premiere, but sometimes Quicktime or Snagit for something simple. I have tried Da Vinci Resolve, but I couldn’t get on with it, I am too used to Premiere.
