Keypirinha: A fast launcher for keyboard ninjas on Windows
I went like this: Launchy -> KeyPirinha -> PowerToys (got too slow) -> UELI
It works really well for me, I've been using it for two years now.
-
'Screen Apnea'
I recently replaced Powertoys Run with ueli: https://ueli.app/
Basically the same thing, but Powertoys Run was always slowish while ueli is very snappy. It also integrates with Everything.

Should I worry about using Raycast on MacOS?
There are these open source alternatives, I haven’t checked their privacy policies or their code Maybe try and report back? https://www.cerebroapp.com https://qsapp.com https://ueli.app https://github.com/ParthJadhav/Verve

What checks would allow you to deem a closed-source app as safe? (worries over Fluent Search)
Check out ueli, which is open source

Open source Windows apps you might have not heard of but (probably) should have
Good list. I'd probably add OpenShell (probably quite obvious) and Ueli as an app launcher.

Sol: Open-source Alfred/Raycast alternative for macOS
I shared the exact same sentiment when I transitioned to Windows after a long period of only using macOS. I eventually began building a launcher myself using C# and over time it has become my daily driver. Feel free to check it out at https://github.com/dkgv/pinpoint, PRs welcome :-)
A few other nice candidates I found include:
- Keypirinha: https://keypirinha.com/
-
PowerToys – 11 features Microsoft won’t add to Windows
You know what, never mind, it's weirdly slow (1 to 2 seconds to react, doesn't intercept key shortcut early enough)
https://ueli.app/ is way better, and has incredible plugins.

Using Ubuntu with Ulauncher
Anyhow, I do prefer the Ulauncher over using the native GNOME launcher (probably has a different name like application menu, I mean the thing that opens once one clicks the super key).
- ULauncher - Larger window area?
-
How do you guys make good use of the app grid? I feel like I use it way less than I originally thought.
NOTE: If you're using a Wayland session, the Ctrl + Space shortcut (which brings up the launcher) will be unreliable due to other windows eating the keyboard events instead (see the official Ulauncher wiki). The workaround solution is very simple and also works on X11, so we'll replace Ulauncher's default binding with the workaround technique everywhere, so that it works universally on both X11 and Wayland.

Name a program that doesn't get enough love!
Ulauncher an application launcher for Applications. With numerous extensions. It's also not to difficult to write an extension, so you can customise it with your workflow.

I wish the Linux Mint search was smarter
Consider using https://ulauncher.io/ , Ubuntu now has a Spotlight extension too.

how to launch ulauncher on startup, possibly not with runit?
I currently am running Void with i3 and the default dmenu. I wanted to try out ulauncher app launcher. To get it to work, I launch using dmenu or type ulauncher in the CLI, then i hit escape to close it but it still stays in the system tray so that I can call it anytime (going forward) with $mod-Space.
