What’s the best free email service in your opinion?
I am currently using Tutanota, I've got no issues so far. It is a good start for free, open-source and have the option for you to add YubiKey as your 2FA(U2F/WebAuthn).

Protonmail is down in EU region
If you pay allot for the service, you might want to consider the more transparent alternatives like Tutanota or SimpleLogin for reliability reasons. Also Lavabit is back as an option for those who need a provider that goes above and beyond to defend your data.

I've been using Standard Notes'[0] free tier for a while now without issues. Far superior to Evernote. And apparently EN uses your data for machine learning so they can monetize their free users. Standard operating procedure.
