Ask HN: I've Built a DHT Torrent Sniffer and Search Engine. Should I Release?
5 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 23 Oct 2022
Sorry for the bad news: it's not going to work.
Can you filter the 95% spam and dead torrents?
It's very very hard what you are trying to do. Takes lots of effort to be somewhat usable. It's duplicating Google, withou their monopoly. A few have tried. My university lab has been building a torrent search engine for 17 years and 3 months. Fully decentralised, no servers, no browser, now called Web3. Burning 7 million Euro in tax payer money, building a distributed ledger in Sep 2007. So expect a long road ahead. (our engine: https://github.com/Tribler/tribler/wiki)
But... the whole point was that I don't have to pay for anything.

I think there was a tor torrent client, https://www.tribler.org/

I read this as mentioned by the developer, in my previous post.2 projects | reddit.com/r/tribler | 18 Jan 2022
Thank you very much for your ideas and suggestions! The second suggestion is something we have also been thinking about but critically depends on the performance of E2E encryption. This also already goes back to 2013, see [this issue](https://github.com/Tribler/tribler/issues/3) for example.

Yes, this is exactly what we are working on for 16 years now. Longest running torrent, trust and Tor-fork project: https://github.com/Tribler/tribler/wiki
Its as hard as making a decentralised Google and decentralised YouTube at the same time. Over 75 master students and PhDs put their coding efforts in it at Delft University.

How technically feasible would it be to continue Lbry without Lbry Inc, having it hosted by the people only?
3 projects | reddit.com/r/lbry | 29 Jan 2023
And for data hosting and other end user stuff, there is lbry-sdk, which is also used by lbry desktop app. https://github.com/lbryio/lbry-sdk

'LBRY is the first digital marketplace to be controlled by the market's participants rather than a corporation or other 3rd-party. It is the most open, fair, and efficient marketplace for digital goods ever created, with an incentive design encouraging it to become the most complete.': https://lbry.com/

can a fictional history blog attract a lot of traffic?
2 projects | reddit.com/r/Blogging | 22 Sep 2022
by this i mean a site that is structured like a history blog but is set entirely in a fictional world; the original plan was to make an animated web series with a similar format (i.e like oversimplified but of course set in a fictional world) however the problem with this is that animation takes a lot of effort and so i’ve been thinking to do it in blogging format instead. might be (initially) hosting it on neocities and eventually will be making a darknet (tor and i2p) mirror for it as well. don't have any social media accounts besides reddit, youtube, and lbry; i prefer web 1.0 (where most of the web consisted of creative and down-to-earth personal (blogging) sites) over web 2.0 (where most of web communication takes place on bloated centralised and commercialised sites).
What Are Decentralized Social Networks and Where to Find Them
4 projects | reddit.com/r/BlockX | 15 Sep 2022
LBRY is as much a federated social network as it is a blockchain-powered one. It offers different forms of dashboard customization, which makes it a mixture of Reddit, Facebook, Youtube, but on-chain.
What are some alternatives?
qBittorrent - qBittorrent BitTorrent client
searxng - SearXNG is a free internet metasearch engine which aggregates results from various search services and databases. Users are neither tracked nor profiled.
torsocks - Library to torify application - NOTE: upstream has been moved to https://gitweb.torproject.org/torsocks.git
torrent-paradise - Decentralized DHT search site for IPFS
ipfs - Peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol
PeerTube - ActivityPub-federated video streaming platform using P2P directly in your web browser
goxlr-on-linux - Documentation and scripts to make the GoXLR and GoXLR Mini useful on Linux.
lbry-desktop - A browser and wallet for LBRY, the decentralized, user-controlled content marketplace.
i2p.i2p - I2P is an anonymizing network, offering a simple layer that identity-sensitive applications can use to securely communicate. All data is wrapped with several layers of encryption, and the network is both distributed and dynamic, with no trusted parties.
py-ipv8 - Python implementation of Tribler's IPv8 p2p-networking layer
quarry - Python library that implements the Minecraft network protocol and data types
