Tox VS Element

I'm a big fan of Matrix, and run a small homeserver for my family in friends. But if you really want to explore the frontiers peer to peer seems really intriguing because you don't need any server. https://tox.chat/ just to name one.

How does it compare to the more mature Tox[0]?

I tried to like Jami, but it never worked right when I tried it. I didn't find a decent Android Tox client with video call, but it should work alright for text.

Just heard about Tox today from a podcast: https://tox.chat/ (instant messenger, voice, video, screen share, file share)

Options are limited. All modern messengers require trust in the company running the server they connect to. So the only way to eliminate needing that trust is to use a messenger that is peer 2 peer (no server). This is limiting though since no server means no offline messaging. I know of one messenger that is encrypted, anonymous (required no identifying info to sign up) and is peer 2 peer. tox.chat

With your instance running, you can now use Matrix clients [that support registration tokens] like Element or Nheko to register your user, login and have fun!

You will need to pick a client that you can recommend to your friends and family, because they likely won't bother to look one up. If they are non-technical, then the client is what matters most for them and you need to decide what makes the most sense given their circumstances.

On the matrix side I can recommend Element (https://element.io/) which has a lot of eye candy. I'm not sure what to recommend for XMPP.

You also need to pick a server for them, because again, they won't bother to choose one themselves. If you can, host a XMPP or matrix server yourself!

If most of your audience doesn't use Discord, you're in a good spot. In the web dev world, so many projects use Discord that it's a massive benefit to just be in the server list with them. I felt my project had to use Discord.

It's been a while since I investigated solutions, but I really wanted Matrix to be viable at the time. I would check out https://element.io/ and see if it works for you.

I'm just happy they resisted the buyout by Microsoft.

Matrix is just a protocol. Clients competing with Discord would be things like Element. https://element.io/

It's no Discord (which itself is no WLM, by the way), but I sorely hope it or something open source gets there one day.

I made an account in Cinny using my Github account. I am trying to migrate my account into element.io. How do I do this? Forgot password is not even an option in Cinny.
