Please Help. I have installed everything yet tnote dos note work, there is nothing on the net now.
Maybe jump over on their github and suggest a change? Or perhaps just make your own copy and put it out there for everyone? I have to say it doesn't look like the program has had a lot of love as of late.

request: some "scratchpad" program
If you use KDE, you can use KNotes. A multi platform alternative can be CherryTree. A command line alternative can be tnote, but all of these solutions needs extra dependencies. So, only solution seems vim or emacs with org mode

Can someone recommend a free offline word processor please?
The already mentioned LibreOffice Writer suggested by others is great. There are lighter weight note taking options like tomboy notes if you’re not looking for a full word processor necessarily.

Any idea for an open source Linux app?
There's also Tomboy, whose original C# development stopped in 2017. The successor, tomboy-ng, was rewritten in Pascal, of all things.

request: some "scratchpad" program
P.S. I think that a special mention for Tomboy-NG is needed. Is a rewrite of a old Tomboy application, removing Mono dependencies
