CurseForge launcher finally launched on Linux! And it only supports... WoW?
Since you're on Linux, I suggest my CLI mod manager Ferium. It can download and update mods from modrinth, curseforge, and GitHub releases. It's super fast and UI is pretty good. The major downside right now is that it can't download mod packs (tracking issue)

[Media] Ferium, the CLI Minecraft mod manager written in Rust that can download from Modrinth, CurseForge, and GitHub Release, is now 20x faster (from 140s to 7s)! There have been more safety enhancements too.

Also I'll just quickly plug my mod manager. If you're comfortable with the CLI then try Ferium, it can download mods from Modrinth, CurseForge, and GitHub Releases.

introducing packwiz2nix: one of the best tools for creating minecraft modpacks, now compatible with nix!
hi all! recently i've started work on hosting a minecraft server, configured mostly declaratively with nixos and nix-minecraft. one small problem i found was that there wasn't really a way to easily use packwiz (a great tool i use to keep modpacks up to date automatically, distribute to friends across multiple launchers, and deploy to servers) modpacks i already had - so, i figured why not integrate it with nix!

Building Minecraft modpacks on linux?
Perhaps try using the CLI tool packwiz. It's the one I personally use to maintain my packs

For modpacks, I'd recommend looking into Packwiz support. https://github.com/packwiz/packwiz

Is there a way to set up a modded server (forge) that doesn't require me to lead all my not so technologically inclined friends through the maze of installing mods.
If you are more technically inclined and have some server hosting space to spare, you might want to consider things like packwiz - this adds a MultiMC pre-launch hook that automatically updates modpacks - or SKCraft Launcher, a sort of "white-label launcher" that distributes whatever modpacks you like.
What are some alternatives?
pufferpanel - PufferPanel is an open source game server management panel, designed for both small networks and personal use
Launcher - 🚀 Distribute your Minecraft modpacks with a custom launcher
Hive - Lightweight and blazing fast key-value database written in pure Dart.
feather - A Minecraft server implementation in Rust
PrismLauncher - A custom launcher for Minecraft that allows you to easily manage multiple installations of Minecraft at once (Fork of MultiMC)
minecraft-server - A Minecraft server implemented in Go
ferium - Fast and multi-source CLI program for managing Minecraft mods and modpacks from Modrinth, CurseForge, and GitHub Releases
PolyMC - A custom launcher for Minecraft that allows you to easily manage multiple installations of Minecraft at once (Fork of MultiMC)
gocraft - A Minecraft like game written in go
mcwss - A websocket server for Minecraft Bedrock Edition
MCHPRS - A multithreaded Minecraft server built for redstone.
mcsoft-auth - Authenticate to Minecraft using the Microsoft Authentication Scheme from Rust.
