Show HN: Glossarie – a new, immersive way to learn a language
Shout out for an app called Language Transfer that I just came across via Reddit (https://www.languagetransfer.org/). It teaches languages speaking first through a simple audio course. Developed by one guy, completely free and without ads, but from what I’ve seen so far has a very clear focus on quickly getting up to speed with a different angle than other courses.

Show HN: Hacker News in Slow Italian (By AI)
In terms of learning materials I found classes that follow the CEFR system (A1, A2, B1 etc) have been more helpful than Duolingo and also this free resource https://www.languagetransfer.org/

How Much Can Duolingo Teach Us?
I speak English natively, and have learned French, German, Sesotho and Japanese with a mixture of books and immersion. Obviously immersion is the best way.
I used Duolingo to help me learn Spanish, and I was struck by how artificial it is. It may teach you to understand a language, but not to speak it.
Far superior, in my experience, is https://www.languagetransfer.org, which has free audio lessons to learn French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic, and Swahili (and English for Spanish speakers). This is the most natural method short of immersion I have ever experienced, and very effective. Amazingly, it is all done by one man, and runs on donations.
There is an app, which is delightfully clean and usable.
Mihalis also has an introduction to music theory, which gets excellent reviews!
Mihalis from Language Transfer teaches in a similar style (but with a Greek accent rather than a Polish one.) He's free (takes donations) and the courses are extensive. The selection is limited, but he's a one man band.

How Duolingo reignited user growth
Personally, I never found Duolingo to be a great app for learning a language. By far the best combo I’ve ever found is following along with Language Transfer [0] lessons and reviewing flash cards using Anki. Adding in-person classes to the mix greatly boosts that.
I’ve learned more Greek in 2 years now with that combo as an adult than I did in a decade learning Spanish as a child by only taking classes. The only thing more effective was living in a city that only spoke the language I was learning after I had achieved a certain level of proficiency.
Duolingo made me feel like I was learning a language and having fun while doing it, but every time I looked back on using it, I observed I really wasn’t learning very effectively with it. It’s far too robotic and impractical in my experience.

Ask HN: What are you going to learn in 2023
This was suggested for learning Greek here few weeks ago: https://www.languagetransfer.org/
I tried few lessons and the method seems very promising.

Am I too old to learn a new language? (31F)
No prob! I started w/duolingo, good start imo but you'll hit a point where it stops being useful. I did Pimsleur (good for pronunciation, many libraries carry) and language transfer (free, guy is awesome) for grammar and Spanishdict for vocab building.
