Personally, I have two phones (main phone with data SIM and SMS-slave-phone with a SIM card since the government likes to force us all have a number for whatever reason). I have both Pulse SMS (in case I ever need to reply, hasn't happened yet) and telegram-sms running. The latter forwards my SMS to a Telegram channel. I think it also supports replying, but I never tried. Good luck!

If you mean SMS is not synced, then there are a couple of ways ([1](https://github.com/telegram-sms/telegram-sms), [2](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.klinker.messenger), [3](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/eu.droogers.smsmatrix/)), but again, not sure how private they are or how well they even work. SMS is insecure though, and I wouldn't use it for anything I am not forced to use it for (which 99.9% of the time is activation codes).

Telegram SMS (version 4345): Forward SMS and more to Telegram

SMS Backup+ (https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus) uses an IMAP connection to back up messages to a folder in a mailbox, and can also restore to a new phone (restore SMS only, not MMS/RCS). Can also add phone calls to your Google Calendar as entries. Can use any IMAP account, but defaults to GMail. Requires setting an application password for GMail access. Advantage: View and search messages within your email account.

Alternatively there's SMS Backup+, which is more focused on exporting. It will copy your messages into individual email messages in Gmail (or any email account supporting IMAP).

Next I would highly recommend backing up your SMS messages using an app from the Play store. "SMS Backup and Restore" works well as already mentioned here, there is also an app called "SMS Backup+" which backs up your SMS and Call log as emails in your Gmail account. This is nice so you can still search through old messages if you want and is slightly more accessible than SMS Backup and Restore's Online viewer for its XML backups. SMS Backup+ requires a little work around now to connect to Gmail due to Google's security changes over the last few years, and that workaround can be found here: https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/issues/972
