supabase VS chakra-ui

Supabase positions itself as the "open source Firebase alternative." It was founded in 2020 and is a developer-friendly serverless database platform that supports over 20 frameworks, including popular tools like Next.js, React, Nuxt, Svelte, Flutter, and Vue.

If you use PostgreSQL and are proficient with using its row-level security feature, you can choose from several tools/services built above RLS, including Supabase, PostgREST, and PostGraphile. They all provide a way to expose database CRUD as a web API, assuming you've configured the RLS rules to properly secure the access.

Here the thing that accelerated my development the most: Supabase. Thanks to its Database, Authentication, and Edge Functions, we were able to rapidly develop the app. Their JS library made development super seamless, and their local development stack made testing a breeze.

I ended up coming up with a solution using Supabase and Netlify Build Plugins that I'm pretty happy with!

There are roughly 10 million downloads of my NuGet packages in total, all of whom are open source. This is 20 times more downloads than for instance SupaBase. SupaBase is evaluated at 1 billion dollars and have been given VC funding of more than 100 million dollars.

Today, this ecosystem is going strong with new providers like Hasura, AppWrite and Supabase powering millions of projects. There are a few reasons people choose this style of hosting, especially if they are more comfortable with frontend development. BaaS lets them set up a database in a secure way, expose some business logic on top of the data, and connect via a dev-friendly SDK from their app or website code to save data easily. These modern tools build a blend of managed database with curated plugins such as authentication, great admin dashboards, and function as a service type capability - all in one package, and often offered as a integrated hosted service.

Magic Cloud has roughly 10 million downloads from NuGet, and unfortunately zero of our users have contributed to the project - Neither with code nor with monetary means. To put that number into perspective realise that 10 million downloads is 20 times as much as SupaBase. SupaBase is evaluated at 1 billion dollars.

This error related to the ReactMarkdown component and the useDisclosure hook in the @chakra-ui/react.

We settled on Chakra (https://chakra-ui.com/). Although we also abandoned our ambitions of a Next.js migration, so... I guess it didn't really end up mattering all that much anyway.

It's from the people who made Tailwind, a CSS framework that's basically a reimagining of Bootcamp for the Javascript/component era.

For React, I prefer the astoundingly good MUI framework (amazing components with lots of customizability, a good enough default look, and great documentation): https://mui.com/ If you end up going this route, using their Figma kit (https://mui.com/store/items/figma-react/) plus the Refactoring UI book from above should allow you to whip up a pretty standard-looking, "pretty enough" design in very little time. And then implementing it using the actual MUI lib would just take a few days.
