Write Plain Text Files
I mourn that StackEdit [1] got abandoned. It's online markdown editor that can use git as a backend. Fully cross platform editing (in browser) with synced all text. I used it with GitHub private repository for all my notes but editing on mobile was really buggy. So I moved to notion (unfortunately).

I would love to have something like Notion but using git for all data storage and edit history.
There is https://stackedit.io/ offering it but I stopped using it because of bugs when trying to edit on mobile. And it basically abandoned for the last 2 years https://github.com/benweet/stackedit (only some deps updates, nothing more).

GhostWriter is a distraction free Markdown editor
Most dedicated markdown editors all end up using the same JS code editor components like Ace, CodeMirror or Monaco, and those editors have great vim keybindings usually as extensions or options. See if the tool you're using lets you flip those vim bindings on. For some editors they expose it as an option and for others you have to hack around with the source (for example enabling it with stackedit, a PWA markdown editor like ghostwriter, is possible with same hacking: https://github.com/benweet/stackedit/issues/254 ).

Ask HN: What products other than Obsidian share the file over app philosophy?
FSNotes for macOS and iOS is one I used for a little while.
todo.txt is another thing that comes to mind.
And of course pretty much all of *nix.

FSnote (https://github.com/glushchenko/fsnotes) is one of the closest alternative app to Apple note. Simple and fast.

Evernote to be acquired by Bending Spoons
There’s FOSS https://fsnot.es.
Looks quite flexible. Exports, iCloud Sync, Deopbox, can also have notes as a Git repo.
But big drawback — Apple ecosystem only. But since it syncs to things other than iOS I think other apps can be used on other platform.
Dev has made it clear he will not be able to develop for other platforms.
I have not used it a lot (still on Simplenote and exploring). It looks good and it’s open source so I thought one could check it out.

Apps that play nice with Obsidian
I use FSNotes (https://github.com/glushchenko/fsnotes) for quick note taking and it works particular well in iOS. I love Obsidian and it's currently my main note app for projects and all other aspects of life.

I replaced it with fsnotes, when you disable the sidebar and tweak some settings you get the same thing.

Show HN: Obsidian 1.0
Love Obsidian. My main problem with it and similar markdown apps for notes is the way they store images and attachments. I find it very confusing to maintain multiple different files per note and IMO the only app that nailed it is FSNotes[1] using the textbundle[2] format (with a custom implementation for encrypted notes too). I think it's elegant and future-proof.
But FSNotes is for the Apple ecosystem only and I can't tie myself to a single platform for something so important (I don't need another artificial reason to make OS switching so difficult).
I hope the textbundle feature request[3] gets some love soon. It would be great for Exalidraw files integration too[4].
