Spotify is shutting down in my country. Alternatives?
I use https://github.com/spotDL/spotify-downloader to download and convert my spotify playlists to mp3 or flac files.

I created a Spotify Downloader for the command line
this is cool and all but I already use a tool called spotDL. Is there any benefit to this over that?
What does it offer that's different than `spot-dl`? https://github.com/spotDL/spotify-downloader

Spotify broke and now I can now use a FOSS music player
spotDL will download spotify playlists, artists, or albums that you specify and correctly populate all the necessary metadata, including album art. It's extremely easy to use
- So I have a Spotify playlist that’s around 1k songs long. Is there anyways I can bulk download them as mp4s? I have the song list saved to a spreadsheet

posts that remind me of r/popheadscirclejerk
It's not a perfect solution, but SpotDL claims to find Spotify songs on YouTube and then download them from there. Otherwise, you could just do the work manually of finding your songs on Youtube/other websites and sticking them in yt-dlp.

More ideas: This can also be used to stream your music library. Download music using https://github.com/spotDL/spotify-downloader as mp3 files, upload to dropbox, so on and so forth.

Alternatives to Spotify that are open-source and ad-free.
I use mpd+ncmpcpp with spotdl. works like a charm.

YouTube-dl has been taken down
I see. According to the Web Archive, this website stopped working all the way in November 2023, and http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/ now contains all the same content as the old one and is the new "official" website.

YouTube-dl fork with additional features and fixes
See elsewhere in the thread for details, but youtube-dl was restored by Github and is generally not considered to be in violation of the DMCA. You can see it on Github here: https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl
A copyright holder abused the DMCA process to take it down the first time.

Ask HN: What's the Situation with YouTube-Dl?
The best way is to download the source from github, run `make`, and copy the the file to $HOME/bin . There hasn't been a release for about a year now and the files on the distro repos are even older (I think).
Also YouTube has been doing some changes lately on the the player and a lot of the tools fail to download audio or video.
For example, in the last couple of weeks there have been some issues with a redirect to a 'consent page' : https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/issues/32499
> yt-dlp uses youtube-dl as a core, so if something breaks still needs to go to the youtube-dl and fix it.
No, they don't. yt-dlp is a fork - if something break, they can just fix it in their own codebase without needing to go through yt-dl. yt-dl is still somewhat active, but almost all their commits are backports of fixes from yt-dlp[0].

YouTube-Dl Site Goes Offline as Hosting Provider Enforces Court-Ordered Ban
As noted in the article, the project still has a page on github:
http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/
I've moved on to https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp anyways.
But this is still an infuriating move. youtube-dl wasn't doing anything infringing on its site, was it?
It's laughable how symbolic and ultimately meaningless this is. GitHub had already proven themselves to be a good actor in this particular fight, so not only is the repo online, but we also have http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/
The Uberspace provider is appealing the decision as well. Even with the site down, this looks incredibly positive from where I sit.
