Unfortunately I don't think you're doing anything wrong, I think the sportsipy package is just a wee bit broken. There's a bunch of related (ongoing) issues on the repo about Boxscore failing to pull data from sports-reference.

There's also Lazystream (https://github.com/tarkah/lazystream) which despite its name is simply another (terminal-only) app using the lm/nhlg servers.

Best way to watch sports streams with unRAID
The xteve_lazystream version has xTeve already bundled. If you have an existing xTeve setup you’ll want to run them on different ports, or manually add lazystream (https://github.com/tarkah/lazystream) to your existing xTeve setup and setup a cron job to auto update the lazystream playlists.
