how different are SS13 and SS14?
Of course you can also build from https://github.com/space-wizards/space-station-14 and direct connect to servers.
On https://spacestation14.io/ there are also guides and docs for most everything.

Ask HN: Favourite Open Source Game?
Space Station 14 [0], which is the remake and spiritual successor to Space Station 13, mentioned elsewhere in the thread.
SS13 is a wonderful game, but it's so old and its codebase is so messy that people have been trying to remake it for years. Attempts had mostly gone nowhere until all of a sudden SS14 took off with a few dozen OSS developers. Now they're making fantastic progress (see [1]) and have a game that isn't just playable, but enjoyable! (Not to mention being almost completely on-par with SS13 at this point, with several distinct maps and hundreds of items ported over.)
- A continuation of my last post: Coding in SS13 is a joy.

Question: I'd love to play all the Ultimas again. Realistically, what's the best way to do it?
Ultima 6 - I use ScummVM to play it. It's a great engine that provides a layer of UI compatibility over the game.

How to Get and Run Rolypolys 2
ScummVM, which has been working on Adobe Director support, can detect the game (thank you @mistydemeo <3), but trying to run it will softlock you on the game's title screen, unable to click anything. It's likely this will be fixed in the future, but for now I can't recommend it for this particular game.

Are there Open Source Games?
That last one is an open source engine for a trio of existing free games, but if we count open source engines for commercial games the amount of famous examples grows exponentially. All id Software games up to Doom 3 have had their engines made open source and have a huge number of modern versions available for all of them. So Arcane Dimensions, the greatest by a mile Quake campaign ever made, was completed just three years ago and you need a modern open source engine like vkQuake to play it - even the Quake Remastered engine can't handle the huge AD maps. There's also an open source Morrowind engine, an open source Freespace 1/2 engine (Diaspora above actually runs on this), an open source point and click engine called ScummVM that runs so many old adventure games it's almost an emulator...
What are some alternatives?
