sortablejs VS react-beautiful-dnd

Well, it worked. But only for one case: dragging stuff within only one column. You see, stimulus-sortable uses SortableJS under the hood, which is powerful.

Well, there are obvious leading contenders like `https://sortablejs.github.io/Sortable/` and, within the `vue` space, `https://sortablejs.github.io/vue.draggable.next/`. Most of the stuff I looked at was unmaintained (lots not updated for vue3).

I really disliked the vuedraggable was handling nesting, and it's just a wrapper around a sortable. At the end of the day, my problem was simple enough that I didn't want a 500kb dependency. If you're wanting to do something like the OP but with nesting, I'd definitely start by looking at Sortable, though (maybe wrapping it the way you want).

Have you looked into alternatives to SortableJS btw? It's a good library but it's also pretty big (43kb) based on https://github.com/SortableJS/Sortable/blob/master/Sortable.min.js.

Sortable is a standalone library.

You can try react-beautiful-dnd, it's amazingly simple, I actually switched from react-dnd a couple months ago to react-beautiful-dnd, and it was easy af.

Building a good D&D library, especially one that is accessible, is difficult. Keep that in mind if you decide to roll your own D&D or any other UI component for that matter.

react-beautiful-dnd was maintained by Atlassian, and they stopped updating it to focus on other projects. 1.4 million weekly downloads.

I know that MUI pro offers datagrid tables which come with that feature out of the box. However if you want to do it without paying, I would suggest implementing react-beautiful-dnd. https://github.com/atlassian/react-beautiful-dnd

Though react-beautiful-dnd is not being maintained actively, it is more mature and has a huge community around it. Because of this, it's definitely going to be challenging to convince folks to jump ship. It also has some advanced features like support for multiple dragging, virtual list support, and SSR that dnd kit doesn't offer out of the box.
