    2) Improved throughput. There are a few different algorithms that have been developed by Jito Labs and Solana Labs to improve the amount of parallelism happening during block packing (when a leader validator builds a block from transactions) and replay (when other validators replay blocks to make sure they're good). Solana validators have super good hardware but we don't even use that many of the cpu threads for actually executing transactions, and the current block space limits (48 million compute units) were conceived for the use of 4 cpu threads (our validator server has 48 cpu threads). The older block packing algorithm was also really bad at handling situations where a certain transaction type was spammed heavily (nft mints for example) and degraded parallelism. Anyway, it seems that these newer replay algorithms are over 2x better than the current implementations -- you can find more about them in the depths of github or discord. Some seem close to production-ready and I think we will see faster confirmation times and increasing of the block compute limits. ABIv2 is another architectural change that will substantially improve throughput as well (afaik) but I know less on this subject. I'm not sure when this will be ready but I've heard that the earlier half of the year is the target There are other upcoming changes to look forward to, but it's probably best to summarize in another post.

Lastly, Algorand IS fast: 6k TPS with 3.7s blocks, soon 10k TPS with 2.5s, and in a not-too-distant future 46k TPS, all of which with instant finality. Algorand IS cheap, and actually exactly as cheap as Solana now ($0.00025/txn: &, but with the added benefit that all transactions (whether they're NFTs, non-native assets, or using smart-contracts) are handled the same by the protocol, so same speed and same fees as regular payments. Lastly, Algorand IS clean: it's so clean in fact that it's almost carbon-neutral on a regular basis, but really it's carbon negative because fees are automatically used to offset the remaining carbon emissions with ClimateTrade (see this report, even though it doesn’t take into account recent upgrades in scalability and not comparing smart-contract transactions, so Algorand would be first on top in reality:

Solana has been making news quite often lately. The Solana Foundation has recently announced the launch of its flagship Android phone, Solana Mobile and opening physical stores for crypto enthusiasts. Even more recently, the Helium network proposed moving operations to the Solana blockchain. Helium (HNT) is a decentralized, blockchain powered network that operates as an alternative wireless internet service. HNT has a fully diluted market cap of $800M. You can read the full proposal here.

You can contribute to the Solana core tech team! They're constantly working on network level optimization. The founder actually used to work on distributed systems at Qualcomm before going on to build the consensus protocol and chain.

As an example, Solana recently implemented QUIC in its latest release which is pretty cool:

  • The State of Interactive NFTs on Flow
    5 projects | | 18 Aug 2022
Overall, I think we're going to see continued experimentation with interactive NFTs because that's what more engagement demands, and more engagement and utility is what we want. The problem is that most non-Flow blockchains need to solve some scalability issues before being viable for high-engagement interactive NFT experiences. Some projects like The Sandbox have started to migrate to layer 2 solutions like Polygon so they can meet the demands as users interact and do more with their NFTs. In general, blockchains are working to be faster and better. Solana focuses on speed, claiming to be the fastest blockchain in the world. Layer 2 solutions like Polygon aim to be a fast and cheap decentralized scaling platform for Ethereum. Ethereum itself will see a number of scalability upgrades come to fruition as a change of consensus mechanism coupled with a layer 2 scaling initiative helps reduce gas costs. The data storage needs for interactive NFT experiences on these chains might be provided by solutions like airweave and IPFS as on-chain data storage is quite expensive. I don't see why excited developers won't deliver a lot of interesting projects in this space.
  • F**ck what haters say about Solana. It ain't perfect - I know, but it sure has the most active and innovative ecosystem of all of crypto. What projects are you mirin' rn?

    2 projects | | 13 Oct 2022
With v1.3.42, trie sync process consumed >7GB of RAM when syncing shard 1 state. That’s why we added a new trie sync variant based on the depth-first algorithm that will make the internal structures contain less data at any certain time because the nodes traversal will reach leaves nodes before adding new branch nodes. We also made the intercepted trie node struct hold only the byte slice of the trie node, not the un-marshalled version. The un-marshalling will happen during the actual trie sync. Lately, I started to explore through docs of many different blockchain protocols out there to find the quickest and simplest entry point to learn how to write Smart Contracts using Rust language. There are fantastic tools from the Polkadot ecosystem. Solana and Terra also look great, and I will for sure take a closer look at these later. But I found that Elrond blockchain has many simple examples of straightforward code. The tooling is also quite impressive, so I decided to spend some time with it first.
