Are lua setups needlessly complicated or am I crazy?
There are tons of cool lua plugins for neovim , and you can configure them mostly with lua and adding their large configs in my init.vim file made my config more messier , my old config https://github.com/siduck76/dotfiles/blob/master/nvim_confs/sidark/init.vim

Indentation on empty lines with indent-blankline plugin
I made this rather shitty plugin which worked for my purposes so far. Not sure if this is what you're looking for and I'm not the most experienced programmer so I'm not too confident when it comes to sharing it, but maybe you'll find it useful
