You can pay for FOSS software. I do it to support FOSS developers and maintainers.
software example: Krita https://store.steampowered.com/app/280680/Krita/ source code https://invent.kde.org/graphics/krita
game example: Shapez https://store.steampowered.com/app/1318690/shapez/ https://github.com/tobspr-games/shapez.io

What is your opinion on gaming?
Shapez.io is sold Steam but the source code and build instructions are on github: https://github.com/tobspr-games/shapez.io
-
Shapez on Epic for free!!
It's been free on github the whole time 😝
-
Any free games similar to factorio?
It's free on github too :P
-
Does anyone know how to build Shapezio from source?
apparently the instructions from github are outdated or something
-
Did you ever published an electron application on Steam?
I have experience in releasing an Capture Note made with Electron and there are some annoying processes, but it is possible without as much difficulty as I thought. From what I know, there are also games that have been released. Try looking for "Danger Crew" or Shapez. Shapez is open source, so it may be more helpful.

Built Shapez.io from github on Ubuntu 20.04; now I need to build a complex shape to level up, but I don't have a stacker yet? Is this broken?
It's possible that this is a bug in how I've built the local version, or that the local version is only a demo. So I have filed https://github.com/tobspr-games/shapez.io/issues/1500 to see if that's the case.

Is it possible to release an electronJS (html, js) on steam? Is there any rules to respect for the executable?
Pretty sure shapez.io is an Electron app, and that's on Steam.

Would it be a really bad idea to make your game open source? Give it a forum where anyone can commission features, and ask for donations from players/ modders to fund managing and debugging the project, keeping it a coherent whole.
Hmm, like Thrive and Shapez.io?

How to install old(er) linux games with unmet dependencies?
VVVVVV at least has since become open source.

Good Games for 13 year old laptop with linux mint (Its a Mac book pro 5.1)
VVVVVV - A platformer where you flip gravity instead of jumping. Was recently open-sourced to celebrate the game's 10th anniversary!

Can you give an example of well-designed C++ code, and explain why you think it is so?
Yeah, just look at this beauty! https://github.com/TerryCavanagh/VVVVVV/blob/master/desktop_version/src/Game.cpp
- Ask HN: Favourite Open Source Game?
- how would i make a game like VVVVVV
-
Is making a game supposed to be this messy?
Finally, games are really that complex. Check out for example Terry Cavanagh's blog post on releasing the source code for VVVVVV, and check out the source for Game.cpp (although keep in mind this was ported from ActionScript).

Nothing but the truth here..
So it seems to be an unofficial policy rather than a written rule, if those allegations are true (remember that those are Wolfire's claims of what Valve said). Certainly there doesn't seem to be consistent enforcement - for instance Tales of Maj'Eyal is free, but $7 on Steam. Apparently there are some minor differences - does that mean that they can claim that it's a "separate version" and hence doesn't need price parity, even though 99.9% of the game is identical? There's also VVVVVV, which is open source (albeit years after initial commercial release) where you can freely build the exact same copy as on Steam ($5), including steamworks support. Does that count as a "separate version" when you just have to compile code? Admittedly these are two indie games, albeit extremely well-known ones, but then - isn't Wolfire Games also an indie studio?

Seems Steam Deck verification is using Proton instead of native builds in some instances
I think it's worth noting VVVVVV has actually been open-sourced https://github.com/TerryCavanagh/VVVVVV
