What is the best way to develop a frontend using only HTML, CSS, Bootrap, JS w/o frameworks?
If you do want to use a framework and get up and running quickly, but you still want to know what's going on and have some ability to customize it, maybe you can start with one of the really minimal CSS frameworks like Milligram or Sakura and then add your own modifications.

- MVP.css – Minimalist stylesheet for HTML elements

Almond.css: Collection of CSS styles to make simple websites look nicer
I'm a fan of Sakura[0] for this purpose. About the same size, with a recently-added dark version, which can do the OS-choice switch without javascript.

Pico CSS Framework
I agree. That is why I actually just decided to use different css files for different themes in sakura.css [1] (it comes in at 3.8k / ~1.8k gzipped)
I also had friends who didn't want to understand CSS, and adding in media queries, variables, and dark mode support would only just confuse them even more.
Shameless plug, but do check out [sakura.css](https://github.com/oxalorg/sakura). Would be happy to hear your feedback on it :)

The best classless CSS frameworks in 2021
Ever need style for some plain HTML? Then classless CSS frameworks are for you. I started using these when working on code examples for our Best Date Libraries post. The plain HTML examples looked distractingly ugly, but writing I didn't want to write any CSS. I found Sakura, a classless CSS framework. With just one CSS file my examples looked far more polished. And I didn't have to change the HTML at all.

Hacker News Needs a Dark Mode
I know you mentioned you don't like extensions, but for those that don't mind Dark Reader is really useful:
I have it setup to enable according to the system. Also, I use the whitelist mode, so I enable on specific websites instead of having it enable for every one automatically.
It's available on mobile via Firefox for Android!

DuckDuckGo breaks Dark Reader?
Dark Reader broke DuckDuckGo, rendering all searches really slow. See https://github.com/darkreader/darkreader/issues/11047 -- if you can get them to fix that then we can fix this one.
It would appear that DuckDuckGo web search has recently made changes that breaks DarkReader https://github.com/darkreader/darkreader/issues/11325 . Was this an intientional choice made by DDG by applying the darkreader-lock meta-tag as suggested in the comments? If so I'll be moving to startpage or something similar. I use DarkReader with the Dark Solarized setting and am not interested in creating a DDG account in order to choose between Dark or Light modes. This new change has affected me on firefox for both android and Linux.
