Completion and auto imports
I think rope is the standard for refactoring, and should provide autoimports soon, though pyright might also be good for that.

What motivates you writing open source software?
However, my biggest and most popular open source project is one that I don't originally write, but rather I inherited a popular project that has been abandoned by their original author/maintainers. I use Python a lot, so I wanted to contribute to the community in a significant way, so unlike my other projects I do take the time promoting this project as well. I felt it's more like a community service for this project.

What are some interesting open source projects to contribute code to?
I am the maintainer rope and pylsp-rope. They are libraries for automated Python refactoring and to do that from any LSP-capable editors. We are always welcoming contributors of all levels.

Why IDEs are Important
Rope has first class support for Vim and it can do a move refactoring, among other refactorings. From this, this feature is available from python-mode and ropevim.

Why did you switch from another language to Rust? Do you regret not learning it earlier?
Okay this depends: if your code is static: perfectly possible for example with https://github.com/python-rope/rope (used for example by VS Code). If it's dynamic / generated via metaprogramming: I never tried it but I can't imagine that it'd work there, yes. However java tooling also can't do that because it simply doesn't support metaprogramming in any noteworthy way.

Writing Python like it's Rust
That would be interesting! You might already be aware. But there's mypyc[0], which is an AOT compiler for Python code with type hints (that, IIRC, mypy uses to compile itself into a native extension).
Wanted to give you a head-start on the lit-review for your students I guess :)

The Python Paradox
Funny how emergence works with tools. Give a language too few tools but viral circumstances - the ecosystem diverges (Lisps, Javascript). Give it too long an iteration time but killer guarantees, you end up with committees. Python not falling into either of these traps should be understood as nothing short of magic in emergence.
I only recently discovered that python's reference typechecker, mypy, has a small side project for typed python to emit C [1], written entirely in python. Nowadays with python's rich specializer ecosystem (LLVM, CUDA, and just generally vectorized math), the value of writing a small program in anything else diminishes quickly.
Imagine reading the C++wg release notes in the same mood that you would the python release notes.

What's the difference with mypyc [0] ? It also compiles Python to native code.

Is it time for Python to have a statically-typed, compiled, fast superset?
More recent approaches include mypyc which is (on the tin) quite close to what you describe, and taichi that lives in between.

It's still alpha, but mypyc lets ordinary Python code be compiled to C extensions just by using type hints from the standard lib. It's currently used in the mypy project.
