The thing is, you then need to take that JSON and use it in rendering code that (with the example of react and JSX) looks suspiciously like the XML/XSLT based approach, except the JSX approach requires figuring out webpack and all that, and you can't return JSX from the backend if you wanted that flexibility, while the XML approach is natively supported directly by browsers, backend programming languages, and databases.
