New Docker Desktop: Run WASM Applications Alongside Linux Containers in Docker
> docker desktop is pretty dead now that it's got restrictive licensing etc...
It would probably be nice to hear more about why you think this is! I've certainly heard of some having to move away from Docker Desktop.
However, at the scale where you need a license (250 employees or 10 million $ in annual revenue) it's not quite as big of an issue, especially at their current pricing per seat: https://www.docker.com/pricing/
> stick to standard open source tools like Colima etc...
Sticking to open source is a great idea!
I think mentioning that Colima runs on macOS and Linux only at the moment is also a good idea: https://github.com/abiosoft/colima
A large market share of the Docker Desktop installs are Windows in particular (since it's "the one way" how most install Docker nowadays, as opposed to not really needing a GUI or the supporting tools on Linux).
In another comment I mentioned Podman Desktop as a mostly viable alternative: https://github.com/containers/podman-desktop
Then there's also Rancher Desktop as well: https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop
Regardless, it's nice to see reputable orgs behind the open source projects as well, which gives a bit more credence to their chances of surviving for the years to come.

Any fully open source docker desktop alternatives?
We evaluated alternatives for docker desktop and will stick to https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop now. It works really good and is fast. The big advantage instead of other competitors is that you can choose dockerd as runtime (so you don’t have to use containerd and nerdctl, which somekind of are drop in replacements - but they are not!)

What’s your favorite way to host your own stuff quick & dirty?
Locally it's Rancher Desktop, and in a cloud Azure Container Apps is just awesome.

Confusion about Kubernetes usage at work
I am using Rancher Desktop, but I hollow it out and delete the included node to install k3d :) Now that https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop/issues/985 is closed it should be a bit easier, but I didn't have any of the problems these folks mentioned with the workaround.

Best solid alternative to minikube+docker desktop that works across Mac OS Intel, M1 and maybe Linux?
We're considering Rancher instead but it doesn't seem to be very mature. One of our devs is already using it and is having this issue: https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop/issues/1274

Docker for Mac Without Docker Desktop
Port forwarding is currently broken if you use dockerd but it will be fixed in the next release or you can run a command to fix it yourself. See https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop/issues/12...
It fails to setup some filesystem links because of Unix permissions. You can fix it in command line. See https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop/issues/11...
If you put your computer into sleep, the VM time will be out of sync. It's going to be fixed in the next release I believe. It's an old classic bug that happened to me with WSL so it was nice to see it again. https://github.com/rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop/issues/83...

Software Company HashiCorp Is Weighing a Potential Sale
Also, no BuSL stupidity, they're all Apache 2 AFAIK: https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-community/blob/idea/23...
And the "all you can eat" toolbox license is just a staggeringly good deal, IMHO, which also comes with a "you can keep your license forever, just no updates" which is way different from setting subscription-based licensing money on fire when your license expires. Whoever came up with that should be applauded because it really drives down my "what about" anxiety of paying subscription money for IDEs

The Fossil Sync Protocol
I readily admit I am not familiar enough with fossil to know about the impedance mismatch, but I'll point out that https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-plugins/tree/idea/241.... https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-community/tree/idea/24... https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-community/tree/idea/24... https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-community/tree/idea/24... may a long way toward finding how they think about those operations

How to Develop an IntelliJ Plugin: A DIY Guide to Adding Drag and Drop with Custom DataFlavors
There is quite a bit going on in our view’s class, so we'll take it slow and go through its functions one by one, according to their importance. The first thing we need to do is to create the structure our items will fit into. com.intellij.ui.treeStructure.Tree seems to best match our needs, and that’s what we’ll use. In order to prepare it for what is coming, we need to configure it.

You are never taught how to build quality software
I offer, again, my JetBrains GrammarKit counterpoint from the last time that assertion came up <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38192427>

I consider the JetBrains parsing system to be world class and they seem to hand-write very few (instead building on this system: https://github.com/JetBrains/Grammar-Kit#readme )

Just paying Figma $15/month because nothing else fucking works
I had the same experience with OmniGraffle, https://www.omnigroup.com/omnigraffle
It just worked. There was support. I wouldn't dig a hole in the ground with my bare hands, why wouldn't I use good tools. Of course I would like to use F/OSS for various reasons.
The model I absolutely love is Jetbrains, their core product is OSS, Apache licensed. The whole thing, totally usable. https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-community
The money I send their way does both, it pays for developers and it puts an amazing artifact in the world that others can use and learn from. If they weren't open source, I wouldnt pay for it. I don't know how many others are the same as me, but Jetbrains really deserves credit here.
