Test Driving a Rails API - Part One
Let’s get started. I prefer to manage my Ruby installations on my development machine with chruby paired with ruby-install. Another outstanding set of tools is rbenv with ruby-build. I highly recommend installing Ruby with one of those two sets of tools. Follow the instructions on their project’s READMEs. For this article, I’ll be running Ruby (MRI) v3.3.0.

How To Set Up Your Coding Environment
By setting up your environment in isolation, you can prevent yourself from a lot of issues when experimenting with code. It makes your code behave more predictable due to the defined state of the runtime environment you are working with. This article should provide you with enough information to get started, but obviously, there is a lot more power embedded in NVM, Virtual Environment and RBEnv. So make sure to check their documentation.

Problems starting msfdb init
One suggestion would be to setup your install based on a development environment using git and a Ruby version manager like rvm or rbenv to allows you to setup a user controlled gemset and execution path.

Is there any reason to use Ruby 2.7 over Ruby 3.x?
For my local machine, I use RVM (head). Other options are rbenv and asdf.
- I'm at the end of my rope with my MacBook reverting to referencing some Ruby 2.6 version I can't remove because it seems to be built into my operating system...

As if there weren't enough packaging tools already: mitsuhiko/rye: an experimental alternative to poetry/pip/pipenv/venv/virtualenv/pdm/hatch/…
Now about the second point on the complexity of the shim strategy (cf. the rbenv implementation) with respect to the PATH update strategy (cf. the chruby implementation), what do you think?

Difference between "rails db:migrate" and "bundle exec rails db:migrate"
While you're learning about this topic, you might want to look into binstubs, which are a similar concept

Having issues installing Ruby
Anyone have ideas on what the issue is? The closest error message I found searching online was linked to this post which I'm not sure is exactly the same since their error message is on a different line (line 9 vs 14) and doesn't mention openssl like my error message does.

cocoapods - `pod setup` failing on `require active_support/core_ext/string/strip` which is installed.
Another option would be to use ruby-install to manually install your desired Ruby version to somewhere on your path. The downside here is that you lose the ability to switch between Rubies. This type of installation would allow you to set $GEM_HOME and $GEM_PATH however you like though.

ruby-install 0.8.3 has been released
ruby-install 0.8.3 has been released. This version explicitly pins the homebrew openssl dependency to [email protected]. OpenSSL 3.0 was released this month and is now available in homebrew. Unfortunately, ruby’s openssl bindings are still working on OpenSSL 3.0 support, so attempting to compile any current ruby version against OpenSSL 3.0 from homebrew will result in a compilation error. Until all actively supported versions of Ruby support OpenSSL 3.0, ruby-install will continue to compile against [email protected] on macOS with homebrew.
What are some alternatives?
When comparing rbenv and ruby-install you can also consider the following projects:
asdf - Extendable version manager with support for Ruby, Node.js, Elixir, Erlang & more
RVM - Ruby enVironment Manager (RVM)
chruby - Changes the current Ruby
ruby-build - A tool to download, compile, and install Ruby on Unix-like systems.
nvm - Node Version Manager - POSIX-compliant bash script to manage multiple active node.js versions
gem_home - A tool for changing your $GEM_HOME
Tokaido - The home of the Tokaido app
fry - Simple ruby version manager for fish
frum - A little bit fast and modern Ruby version manager written in Rust
