Show HN: Driftmania – an open source PICO-8 racing game
Nice work, gives me very Micro Machines vibes for the NES. The only thing I don't like about PICO-8 is that its completely closed source. An open source alternative that seems very promising is Pyxel. It has similar retro / pixel art limitations, a built-in sprite editor, music tracker, etc.

Python Alternative to Pygame similar to LÖVE ?
PySDL2(lower level than Love) and Pyxel(more like PICO-8 but scripted with Python).

Any open source games written in Python? Ideally, something being actively developed
I've been really stoked about the game engine Pyxel lately. Not the right choice for expansive games that you can release on Steam to make big bucks. But for hobbyist who want to start out, it's tremendous. There are loads of open-sourced games made with Pyxel to learn from

MicroPython officially becomes part of the Arduino ecosystem
I'm pretty sure you have to use lua with PICO-8, last I looked at it there wasn't a way to plug in your own language.
You could look at TIC-80 and WASM with micropython compiling to WASM (or even full python).
Or... just use a python tool inspired by PICO-8: https://github.com/kitao/pyxel
