Show HN: Driftmania – an open source PICO-8 racing game
Nice work, gives me very Micro Machines vibes for the NES. The only thing I don't like about PICO-8 is that its completely closed source. An open source alternative that seems very promising is Pyxel. It has similar retro / pixel art limitations, a built-in sprite editor, music tracker, etc.
- Ask HN: Yo wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?

Web App Generation Feature Added to Pyxel, a Retro Game Engine for Python
A function to automatically generate an application launch URL has been added to Pyxel, a retro game engine for Python (https://github.com/kitao/pyxel please add your star to this repository!).

Python Alternative to Pygame similar to LÖVE ?
PySDL2(lower level than Love) and Pyxel(more like PICO-8 but scripted with Python).

Any open source games written in Python? Ideally, something being actively developed
I've been really stoked about the game engine Pyxel lately. Not the right choice for expansive games that you can release on Steam to make big bucks. But for hobbyist who want to start out, it's tremendous. There are loads of open-sourced games made with Pyxel to learn from

MicroPython officially becomes part of the Arduino ecosystem
I'm pretty sure you have to use lua with PICO-8, last I looked at it there wasn't a way to plug in your own language.
You could look at TIC-80 and WASM with micropython compiling to WASM (or even full python).
Or... just use a python tool inspired by PICO-8: https://github.com/kitao/pyxel

Sunday Daily Thread: What's everyone working on this week?
Just discovered Pyxel, a retro game engine, in another thread on this sub, and it's fantastic!

Unity’s New Pricing: A Wake-Up Call on the Importance of Open Source in Gaming
It's not as monolithic as you'd think. There are lots of engines out there but their communities aren't very vocal compared to Unity, Unreal, and especially Godot's community.
Take a look at: https://itch.io/game-development/engines/most-projects
And
https://www.gamedeveloper.com/blogs/the-generous-space-of-al...
If you look at both of these you'll see just how many engines there are and neither of these cover everything. There are plenty of engines popular in the Python community that no one outside of it are aware of. Such as Arcade [0], Python-Tcod [1], Ursina [2], UPBGE [3], and Panda3D [4]. But based on your description you'd really like https://gdevelop.io/. It embraces exactly what you're describing where you can build a game but just installing entire features others have made and put online into your game.

Construct's New WebGPU Renderer
After they switched to a monthly/annual subscription fee with the release of construct 3, I pretty much threw in the towel and switched over to Gdevelop.
https://github.com/4ian/GDevelop
Open source, completely free, and I can run it as a native application on my computer versus a weird web app. The idea that my game is basically tied to a SaaS is just not OK for me.

Easy game making and coding for tech learners
GDevelop is a free, no-code game engine that uses drag-and-drop functionality and menus to build games. It supports Javascript to impliment more complex code. To find out more go to – How to get started making a video game: GDevelop 5 (part one)

Can i create a simple 2D game in a month?
I'd also maybe recommend GDevelop as an alterative. Which uses Block-based "behavior" programming instead of text coding. It also has a bank of ready to go assets (mostly from https://www.kenney.nl/ ). You'll probably be up and running faster with your limited backgrounds. If actual text coding is required GDevelop uses JavaScript as the backend for making custom behaviors .
