He probably didn't even bother to try Proton
Just played games on Linux for the first time. It's way easier than I originally thought since Proton is integrated into Steam client. Can even run non-Steam games through Steam client but had to use protontricks to add dependencies like Visual C++ redistributables.

Installing Osaka Simulator on Linux (with audio)
We'll be needing Protontricks to install those packages into our Proton session of our game (each steam game has their own one). You can install it here https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks.

Modding Question
ALSO if a mod has some kind of external dependency, like if it specifically mentions needing VisualC or .NET Runtime, Protontricks will be a lifesaver for installing these into Proton prefixes. Might not need it often, but could come in handy to know anyways.

[Mint 21.1 "vera"] Attempting to install Mod Organizer 2 (for Skyrim SE), fails with "Invalid file magic number"
The version of steam.py on Github is, annoyingly, different than the one I have.

Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden
Now, what I was trying before just setting the version was to use protontricks, you can install it in the software repository in desktop mode. Then follow the flatpack install instructions

Flawless Widescreen Developer Wants to Help Us Linux Users
Maybe it would be better if we had compatibility with FW in Linux without the use of third-party tools? Those tools are ProtonPreloader, Protontricks, and SteamTinkerLauncher. If so, how can we help the Flawless Widescreen Developer with this?

My goal for this year is finally get rid of windows and read only on GNU/Linux
For Steam games / Proton, protontricks is your friend. Do not use WINE tools / winetricks from a "foreign" WINE install on Proton prefixes.

Super low frame rates playing portal
Proton is a fork of Wine, you won't need to use Wine itself. Looks like protontricks can also setup wine-nine-standalone for you.

Modern BPM Steam with Ubuntu 20.04?
I assume that this is because I'm still using ye olde steamos-compositor (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steamos-compositor/.) I'm interested in switching to gamescope (https://github.com/Plagman/gamescope) but I'm getting the feeling it won't work on my 20.04 vintage Ubuntu; the required version of meson isn't available and I can't find a PPA that contains gamescope. My instinct act this point is to just live with the pain, as fully dealing with this will likely involve just switching all the way to Arch to more closely match the newest SteamOS and I just don't want to do that right now. Anyone know if there is a middleground that will support a modern steam big picture mode without having to totally redo everything?

"An image of SteamOS 3 leaked and people are already getting it running on other portable consoles. Steam itself is just the same Linux client with a different view (it's JavaScript)." - Pavel Djundik
They've written two, actually. One for X11, and a new one for Wayland
- Will the Steamdeck version of SteamOS (the one thats based on arch) be open source?

Valve's Proton Has Enabled 7000 Windows Games on Linux
SteamOS compositor with commits from Valve devs: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steamos-compositor/commits/...
I'm sure they also have/had contractors working on it like they do for the other Linux gaming effors but a claim that it was "was only contracted-out by Valve" needs something to back it up.
