He probably didn't even bother to try Proton
Just played games on Linux for the first time. It's way easier than I originally thought since Proton is integrated into Steam client. Can even run non-Steam games through Steam client but had to use protontricks to add dependencies like Visual C++ redistributables.

Installing Osaka Simulator on Linux (with audio)
We'll be needing Protontricks to install those packages into our Proton session of our game (each steam game has their own one). You can install it here https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks.

How to install mods for Sonic Frontiers on Linux desktop?
Try to run the mod manager in the game prefix by using protontricks.

Modding Question
ALSO if a mod has some kind of external dependency, like if it specifically mentions needing VisualC or .NET Runtime, Protontricks will be a lifesaver for installing these into Proton prefixes. Might not need it often, but could come in handy to know anyways.

Will there ever be any linux support?
I'm learning a bit more about Proton. You can install Protontricks and then run protontricks 824270 and it should install stuff for you.
-
winhttp:request_query_option unimplemented option 21
You can try protontricks with protontricks 1730590 winhttp (1730590 is The Entropy Centre's Steam App ID, that I just looked up on protondb)

Techniques to Get DX9 Games Working, The Maw in Particular?
That might be a problem, you could try to install native d3dx9 and xact to the game's wine prefix using winetricks or protontricks. I'd try d3dx9 on it's own first.
-
How to open the Wine Control panel for a game?
But I suspect that you'd find it much easier and more convenient to just use protontricks for this.

Is there a way to use mods that require Microsoft C++ Redistributable on Linux/SteamOS?
install it in the game's proton instance with protontricks

- Final Fantasy XIV won't install

My friend got the game, he's paid the sub, registered the code/cd key. Can't click next [its greyed out] after the EULA agreement.
If he was on trial, he needs to delete the trial installation, and reinstall the game. I had similar issues on Steam. The https://goatcorp.github.io/ is also a great, 3rd party solution and might even be faster than the game launcher.

How does one run FF14 on a new Librem 14 laptop?
All i have to say is GL... Firstly, Librem runs on a linux kernel, which is not innately compatiable with FFXIV. There are ways around this, the main way is using the xivquicklauncher 3rd party tool. https://github.com/goatcorp/FFXIVQuickLauncher

Issue with download speed and game size
The game really is that big, though the launcher does throttle download speeds. If this is less than your usual download speed, then I would consider looking into XIVQuickLauncher, which should be significantly faster. However, if this is a pretty typical download speed, all this would accomplish is restarting your download.

Some questions for veteran players from someone who is new to XIV, but not MMOs in general.
I recommend using the ffxiv quicklauncher instead of official one. I used to have problems with download speeds too but with this it works as good as it should. Not to mention all the other great features it offers https://github.com/goatcorp/FFXIVQuickLauncher

System Error -2146697211 fix?
Easiest fix would probably be reinstall. I've used https://github.com/goatcorp/FFXIVQuickLauncher to install in the past as the download speed is much much faster (and ffxiv is huge). You can just use the normal Square launcher afterward if you want, too, but if you're sketch about putting your username/password in a 3rd party app that's understandable.
