Is it currently possible to develop smart contracts on Cardano with Scala?
Not yet. Someone (ex-Marlowe engineer from IO) is working on Scalus (https://github.com/nau/Scalus) as a possible Scala eDSL for Plutus.
What are some alternatives?
compiler - Helios is a DSL for writing Cardano smart contracts. This library lets you compile Helios scripts and build Cardano transactions.
opshin - A simple pythonic programming language for Smart Contracts on Cardano
aiken - A modern smart contract platform for Cardano
pycardano - A lightweight Cardano library in Python
