  • PiVPN - Router/WIFI stopped workign after Pi was unplugged
My PiVPN setup for openvpn as per https://pivpn.io/ wouldn't pull the router over, but I agree that if your setup is doing dhcp or dns that could make it look like the router is failing.

pivpn update is supposed to take care of it, but old enough install can be buggy so probably just remove and reinstall if it's possible to re-deploy the configs.
  • I am tired of people in this sub treating VPN as "the golden hammer"
Thus ss you'd have to be complete in that sense as otherwise you'd have nothing to connect to. Also to prevent the whole world to connect to it and start brute forcing it, you should have things like fail2ban, connection whitelists or whatever setup to reduce the attack vector somewhat. So for more most who are unexperienced, a vpn is easier to achieve... especially with a solution like https://pivpn.io to have a wireguard or openvpn setup using server and client certs on a raspberry pi for example.

This is the best option for you. You can actually setup wireguard faily easily with pivpn although you may need to tinker around for a bit in order to expose your local network on the VPN's subnet.

  • Protect your shit. I just managed to get into the admin panel of someone's Pihole via their open ports.
Here are general steps that will depend on your situation: - You have to configure your server's WireGuard service (many tools make this part really easy, especially Docker with the image ghcr.io/linuxserver/wireguard imo).\ - Open a port on your router to redirect 51820 to your server on the same port. (Feel free to change them, it's just a default with WireGuard). Update the config on your devices after you change.). - Install the WireGuard software/app on your client devices (phone, laptop, etc) and scan the QR-code that the server generates.\ - Turn on the VPN on your client device, and boom you're connected without needing to create accounts here and there and give your personal information to third parties.

  • easiest setup for Wireguard in a VM ?
    reddit.com/r/WireGuard | 2021-07-13
If you're already running docker, then IMO the easiest way to run Wireguard is in docker. I run this container. If you aren't running docker or must have Wireguard in its own VM, then easiest would probably be an Ubuntu / Debian VM and PiVPN. OpenWRT is overkill and unnecessary for a Wireguard "server".
  • Using Pihole with Traefik+Docker?
    reddit.com/r/pihole | 2021-07-05
If the services are for you or a small group of people you trust, it's much safer to run a Wireguard server, tell it to use Pihole as a DNS server, and connect your devices to Wireguard. That will give you access to all your home services and no one will be able to use your server except you.
  • Correct way to route container's traffic through wireguard without leakage, but UI access for LAN connections [x-post from superuser]
To permit local traffic one could modify the IPTables rules and add routing rules (see e.g. here) which sadly wasn't working for me. I furthermore tested rnd1783's procedure from his recent question on Reddit which seemed to work, but like him, I am unsure whether that correctly solves my intentions (note the single answer by rcN9).
  • IPTables in Wireguard [Docker] Killswitch
This has the downside that I can't access the interfaces of the routed containers anymore. The authors of the docker image mention a bypass, but I somehow can't get it to work.
