  • PiVPN - Router/WIFI stopped workign after Pi was unplugged
My PiVPN setup for openvpn as per https://pivpn.io/ wouldn't pull the router over, but I agree that if your setup is doing dhcp or dns that could make it look like the router is failing.

pivpn update is supposed to take care of it, but old enough install can be buggy so probably just remove and reinstall if it's possible to re-deploy the configs.
  • I am tired of people in this sub treating VPN as "the golden hammer"
Thus ss you'd have to be complete in that sense as otherwise you'd have nothing to connect to. Also to prevent the whole world to connect to it and start brute forcing it, you should have things like fail2ban, connection whitelists or whatever setup to reduce the attack vector somewhat. So for more most who are unexperienced, a vpn is easier to achieve... especially with a solution like https://pivpn.io to have a wireguard or openvpn setup using server and client certs on a raspberry pi for example.

This is the best option for you. You can actually setup wireguard faily easily with pivpn although you may need to tinker around for a bit in order to expose your local network on the VPN's subnet.

  • Can I automatically forward gmail to my proton?
You can, but I wouldn’t do it directly. Use something like SimpleLogin and have gmail forward to that email and then use simple login to forward to your ProtonMail account.
  • Can you hide/collapse aliases on the app
In addition to Trikotr100's comments, keep an eye on SimpleLogin's GitHub roadmap and feature request pages. Organizing aliases by category and or tag is currently being considered. SimpleLogin Roadmap (GitHub) Feature Requests Category/Tag

I've started using https://simplelogin.io as a non-temporary version of this, seems pretty good
  • Future of protonmail
But you should consider alias services, such as simplelogin.io. That gives you essentially unlimited addresses and also supports sending mails from these aliases (you send the mail to a unique simplelogin.co proxy e-mail address, which is "converted" to the assigned alias address by SimpleLogin). There are more such services available; my experience with SimpleLogin has been very good so I haven't dug deeper. And SimpleLogin also allows you to upload public PGP keys, so the mails they forward are PGP encrypted - which works very well with ProtonMail.

  • '^(\w|\.|\_|\-)+[@](\w|\_|\-|\.)+[.]\w{2,3}$'
I used to do that and had similar problems, but I've since switched to SimpleLogin which has been working great for me so far. Using custom domains, it also lets me create memorable mails for situations where I want to give them out or display them publicly.
  • How to best manage forwarding my email through my personal domain?
You can setup SimpleLogin to forward messages to mailboxes but also there's a beta feature where you can reply to those forwarded messages and it will reverse the alias. https://github.com/simple-login/app
